What Is an Air Conditioner Refrigerant?

Air conditioner refrigerant is responsible for cooling and dehumidifying the air. It’s a chemical compound that undergoes a change from a liquid to a gas and back, absorbing and releasing heat. Here’s how it works.

  • Evaporation: The refrigerant absorbs heat from the indoor air in the evaporator coil, causing it to evaporate and turn into a low-pressure gas.
  • Compression: The compressor then compresses the low-pressure gas, increasing its pressure and temperature.
  • Condensation: The high-pressure, high-temperature gas releases heat to the outdoor air in the condenser coil, causing it to condense back into a liquid.
  • Expansion: The liquid refrigerant then passes through an expansion valve, where the pressure is reduced, cooling it down before it re-enters the evaporator coil.
